Nationwide Call to Endorse Stanford Letter - End the “China Initiative”
APA Justice is calling for university and research institution faculty and staff members to support the letter sent by 177 Stanford University faculty members to Attorney General Merrick Garland raising concerns about the Justice Department's controversial "China Initiative". Dozens of Asian American professors and scientists were impacted.
Key Issues with the "China Initiative" according to the Stanford letter:
The "China Initiative" disproportionally targets researchers of Chinese origin.
In most of the "China Initiative" cases involving academics, the alleged crime has nothing to do with scientific espionage or intellectual property theft.
The "China Initiative" is harming the U.S. science and technology enterprise and the future of the U.S. STEM workforce.
Since September, 214 UC Berkeley faculty members, 167 Temple University faculty members and 198 Princeton University faculty members have shown support of the Stanford letter and sent their own letter to AG Garland.
As part of the APA Justice national campaign, interested faculty and staff members can do one or both of the following:
Write their own letter by following the template and steps provided by the Stanford University organizers at their website, Winds of Freedom.
As of this email, 633 faculty and staff members from 184 universities and research institutions from 45 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico have signed on to endorse the Stanford letter. APA Justice will accept all sign-ons to endorse the Stanford faculty letter at https://bit.ly/EndorseStanfordLetter before 11:59 pm PT, November 2, 2021. A finalized letter with all co-signers will be sent by certified mail to Attorney General Garland around noon ET on November 3, 2021.
We urge all qualified endorsers to take timely action and join this campaign. The APA Justice sign-on form will remain open until the "China Initiative" has ended. We will continue to collect the sign-ons and post the continuing progress at https://bit.ly/319qbxn. We are currently missing endorsers from these 5 states: Alaska, Maine, Montana, Nevada, and Vermont.
