Lily Qi is a Maryland state delegate and the author of Elected American: From Red China to Blue Maryland, a memoir about her journey from China’s Cultural Revolution to an American state legislature—and an immigrant community finding its voice in American democracy.
Delegate Qi has served in the Maryland General Assembly since 2019, thirty years after arriving in the United States alone as an international student. She’s the first person born in China elected to the Maryland House of Delegates. As the only U.S. state legislator who lived through China’s Cultural Revolution, she brings a rare cross-system perspective to identity, belonging, and what it means to be an American. A longtime cultural broker, she is a leading voice on the contemporary Asian American experience, immigrant civic participation, and election reform.
Delegate Qi's work and story have been featured by The Washington Post, NPR, The Wire China, FOX 5 DC, Washingtonian, and other U.S. and international media. Radio Free Asia turned her story into a graphic novel in Mandarin. Elected American was a Politics & Prose nonfiction bestseller and a finalist for the New American Voices Award.
